Dear Trail Riders,
As you may know, the Ride the Ridge outriders have cancelled their annual trail ride for 2012.
Those of us at High Country Ranch Ride have decided continue the tradition of a trail ride in the Pine Ridge area of northwestern Nebraska and will sponsor a similar ride on June 9, 2012.
“Ride the High Country” will be much the same as Ride the Ridge:
·         Ride the High Country is FREE.
·         Doughnuts will be provided by the Agricultural Committee of the Chadron Chamber of Commerce. Bottled water during lunch will be provided by the Crawford Chamber.
·         Please bring your own horse and tack.
·         Pack your drink, lunch, and snacks.

The ride itself will consist of two parts. The morning ride will leave the ranch headquarters at 9:30 a.m. and return in time for lunch. You will not have to carry your lunch with you on the ride. Picnic tables will be available during lunch. The second part of the ride will leave at 1 p.m. and will cover a different area of the ranch. Anyone who cannot be here in time for the morning ride is welcome to participate in the afternoon ride.

We will be riding on private property this year, so you will experience a new and different area. Among the additional activities planned for this year are an evening ride that will include an optional poker run for the adults and a free rummy run for kids under 16.  A free natural horsemanship clinic will be presented by Dr. Robert Reid, DVM after the main ride. Because of liability issues on private property, all riders will be asked to sign a waiver of liability.

For those who are interested, we will be offering a Dutch oven supper on site for under $10 and will need your RSVP for supper by Wednesday, June 6. Souvenir bandanas will also be available for purchase before and after the ride.

Riders are welcome to participate in all, or any part of the planned activities.
If you have any questions or to RSVP for your supper reservations, please call Jim Lees at 308-667-2754, Myrna Betson at 308-665-2343, or Nancy Fisher at 308-665-1580.

We are looking forward to having you join us on June 9, 2012 at Ash Creek Ranch 6 miles east and 1 mile south of Crawford. If you’re coming from the east, continue on Highway 20 to Lemmon Road—about ½ mile west of Whitney Spur. Turn south onto Lemmon Road and then turn west on Bethel Road for 1 mile to Crown Butte Road. Turn south on Crown Butte Road for 2 miles. The roads will be marked. Be ready to saddle up and ride by 9:30 a.m.

Ride the Ridge will not be held in 2012 based on the outriders Decision at a recent meeting. Ride the Ridge was started in 1991 to showcase the Pine Ridge area of Nebraska and introduce the Pine Ride Trail to locan and surrounding area riders. Since the start in 1991, the ride has hosted several thousand riders averaging about 150 riders each year. In the 21 years of the event many, many areas of the Pine Ridge have been explored with riders having many Kodak moments.

Bob Ross of Chadron was the first Trail Boss. The rides have generally been about 10 to 12 miles in length and have covered the Pine Ridge between Chadron, Crawford, and Fort Robinson. Julne, July, and August have been the months selected for the ride. A special "Thanks" goes out to the many people and organizations that have helped make the ride possible.

In 1995 Outriders: Theresa Haynes, Karl Storjohann, Bill Riggs, Tom Walters, Terry Cunningham, Jim Lees and Don Huls helped construct the Outriders Corral, The U.S. Forest Service provided the materials and additional labor including Mike Watts, Jan Storjohann, and Roger Keepers. The water was provided by Chadron State Park and installed by O. J. Dau.
