Northwest Community Action

The Northwest Nebraska Community Action Council works to help low-income families and individuals improve the quality of their lives and attain self-sufficiency.  The Agency serves the citizens of Box Butte, Cherry, Dawes, Sheridan, and Sioux counties. Formed in 1965 to meet the goals of the Federal Economics Opportunity Act of 1964, the council is governed by a 15 member Board of Directors, and is one of nine community action agencies in Nebraska.

Community Services - NWNCAC provides community services to citizens through its four Outreach Offices in Alliance, Chadron, Rushville, and Valentine.  Services include emergency rent and utility assistance payments, food pantry and commodity food distributions, and a clothing and household goods resource.

Weatherization - The Agency provides free home weatherization (weather-stripping, caulking, insulation, etc.) to income-eligible, handicapped, and elderly people in an effort to increase their home energy savings.

Head Start - Head Start is a pre-school family development program that serves 188 children and families in the five-county area.  The program strives to strengthen the individual abilities of the children and their families through individual plans, tailored t their own distinctive needs.

R.S.V.P. - The Retired and Senior Volunteer Program provides opportunities for people ages 55 and over to offer volunteer service. More than 450 volunteers contribute at 75 work stations in the Chadron community. 

Alcohol & Drug Counseling - The Agency offers a program for those struggling with substance abuse addictions and also programs for those persons who live with a substance abuser.  Help for alcohol, drug, and gambling addictions is available.

Sheridan County Public Transportation System - The SCPTS is a community-based transportation system designed to meet the needs of Sheridan County residents who do not have regular access to transportation.  The service is open to all persons who have a need for it; no fare is collected but donations are always accepted.
