The first 50 years of the area history featured important fur trading activities and Indian Wars. Dawes County was crossed by Fort Pierre-Fort Larmie fur traders' trail and the Sidney-Deadwood Trail. There are a dozen other historic sites, including Chartran Trading Post 1841, Whetstone Agency 1872, Camp Sheridan 1874, and the Red Cloud Camp 1876.
